Heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F and butter a 1.5-litre baking dish.

Toss the apple slices with the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice in a large bowl.

Toss the breadcrumbs with the melted butter until they are evenly coated.

Spread a third of the crumbs in the dish, cover with half the apples, then another third of the crumbs and the rest of the apples. Finish with the remaining crumbs.

Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for 15 minutes more, until the top is golden and the apples are tender.
