Boil the macaroni in well-salted water for 3 minutes less than the packet says. Add the broccoli and cook for 3 minutes more. Keep a mug of water, then drain.

In the same pan melt the butter, stir in the flour for 1 minute, then add the milk gradually, whisking, and simmer for 3 minutes.

Take off the heat, stir in the cheese, mustard, salt and pepper until smooth.

Return the pasta and broccoli to the pan and toss, loosening with the pasta water if needed.
