  1. Fill a martini or coupe glass with ice and cold water to chill it while you mix the drink.

  2. Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds with ice. Add the vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice and lime juice.

  3. Shake hard for 12 to 15 seconds, until the shaker is painfully cold.

  4. Tip the ice and water out of the glass and strain the drink into it.

  5. Twist the orange peel over the surface to release its oils, rub it around the rim and drop it in.

Chef’s Tips

  • Use fresh lime juice. Bottled juice turns the drink flat and dull.
  • Measure the cranberry juice. Too much makes the drink sweet and pink instead of dry and crisp.
  • Chill the glass. A warm glass warms the drink within a minute.

Common Substitutions & Variations

  • Lemon is the everyday swap for lime in this kind of dish — the acidity plays the same role even though the flavour is not identical.

Pairing Suggestions

  • Sushi
  • Oysters
  • Salted nuts

Storage & Reheating

Made to order. A batch of the vodka, liqueur and cranberry keeps in the fridge for a day, but the lime juice should be added and shaken just before you serve.
