A Little Background
Nothing is mixed. That is the whole idea of a dump cake, where the ingredients are tipped into the dish in layers: fruit at the bottom, dry cake mix over it and butter on top. As it bakes, the butter melts into the mix and forms a golden, crumbly crust, and the fruit bubbles underneath like a cobbler.
The layers matter more than they look. Spread the fruit evenly, then sprinkle the dry cake mix over it in a thin, even layer without stirring. Do not stir or press. Pockets of dry mix would stay powdery, so cover every part of the surface.
The butter goes on in thin slices. Cover as much of the surface as you can, since any dry patch will stay floury. Melted butter poured over works too, and it spreads more evenly.
Bake until the top is golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges. Serve warm, with ice cream or cream.
