-
Put the mint leaves, sugar and water in a julep cup or tumbler and press gently with a spoon or muddler, just to bruise the leaves and dissolve the sugar. Do not shred them.
-
Add the bourbon and fill the cup with crushed ice.
-
Stir with a long spoon until the outside of the cup frosts, then top up with more ice to make a dome.
-
Slap the mint sprig against your hand to release its aroma, set it in the ice and serve with a short straw placed close to it.
Chef’s Tips
- Press the mint gently. Shredded leaves make the drink bitter and grassy.
- Use crushed ice, made by wrapping ice cubes in a tea towel and hitting them with a rolling pin.
- Hold the cup by the rim or base so your hand does not warm the frost.
Pairing Suggestions
- Southern fried chicken
- Pimento cheese
- Country ham biscuits
