  1. Heat the oven to 170°C / 340°F and line two trays. Melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup together over low heat, stirring until smooth.

  2. Stir the bicarbonate into the hot water and add it to the pan. Mix in the flour and oats.

  3. Roll 16 balls, set them 5 cm apart on the trays and flatten each lightly.

  4. Bake for 15 minutes until deep gold. Cool on the tray for 5 minutes.
